European Day against the Death Penalty
The 'World Day against the Death Penalty', marking work for the abolition of the death penalty, has been celebrated on 10 October annually since 2003.
This year, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, together with the EU European Day against the Death Penalty, arranged a panel debate between the Council's Secretary-General Terry Davis, Sweden's Human Rights Ambassador Jan Nordlander, the Council of Europe's Goodwill Ambassador Bianca Jagger and former French Minister of Justice Robert Badinter. Local students had the chance to put questions to the panel and the discussion was followed by a photo exhibition on the 60th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
