Conference: Justice and Rule of Law in the South Caucasus

A conference on the rule of law, organised by the Council of Europe within the framework of the Swedish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers and in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, takes place in Tbilisi (Georgia) from 19 to 20 November. The main subject of discussion will be "Justice and Rule of Law in the South Caucasus - achievements and challenges for the judicial professions." This event will be attended by Justice Ministers, Presidents of Supreme Courts, Principal State Prosecutors, Ombudspersons and other members of the judicial professions in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

On Tuesday, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Frank Belfrage presented a report of activities in the Committee of Ministers during Sweden's Chairmanship. The focus was on the Georgian conflict when the Swedish Chairmanship reported to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb of Finland and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt of Sweden met today in Brussels as chairs of the OSCE and the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe respectively. Regarding the situation in Georgia, they called for a strict adherence to the six-point ceasefire agreement of the French and Russian Presidents.
