Download the final report from Rights Work!

Rights Work! - the international conference on systematic work for human rights implementation was the first of its kind. It was organised by Sweden in cooperation with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, in November 2008.

The aim was to stimulate other countries and actors to work on human rights in a systematic way. Rights Work! was also an opportunity for Sweden to learn from others. Sweden's intentions at this stage have been fulfilled, and we will now continue to follow up on some of the ideas and recommendations that emerged from Rights Work! In a final conference report conclusions and recommendations for the continued work to implement human rights are presented.

At an informal reception at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on November 5, delegates attending the Rights Work! conference were welcomed to Stockholm by the Minister for International Development Cooperation's State Secretary, Joakim Stymne.

"I wish to emphasise how this conference reflects the importance the Swedish Government attaches to systematic work for human rights on the national level," Joakim Stymne said.
"Sweden is now pushing the issue during its Chairmanship of the Council of Europe and will also allocate top priority to it during the Swedish EU Presidency in 2009," he added.

"Human rights can only be realised if people are informed about their rights and know how to use them"

Mr Thomas Hammarberg, Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, is optimistic about the conference "Rights Work!". He thinks that many feel the time has come to address the problem on the implementation gap seriosly.
