Sweden has long provided Afghanistan with humanitarian aid as well as development support. In recent years, this has been combined with increased Swedish efforts to stabilise the security situation in the country through military and police missions operating under the UN-mandated international security force, ISAF, and EU's police mission, EUPOL.

In partnership with the Afghan government and together with numerous other countries, Sweden carries out activities to strengthen democracy, human rights and good governance in Afghanistan. The aid is directed towards education, infrastructure, health care, support to disabled people, mine clearance and various humanitarian projects. It involves military, police as well as civilian aid.
