Ministry for Foreign Affairs
Carl Bildt a main speaker at conference on nuclear disarmament
On 2 February Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt will travel to Paris to attend an international conference on nuclear disarmament, the Global Zero Summit.
Global Zero was launched in December 2008 with the objective of eliminating all nuclear weapons by 2030.
Global Zero is a major worldwide initiative against nuclear weapons and the Minister for Foreign Affairs has been invited to attend the conference as main speaker on the afternoon of 3 February.
In conjunction with the Global Zero Summit, Mr Bildt will also have bilateral talks with the French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Bernard Kouchner, and others.
Global Zero has been endorsed by more than a hundred well-known top politicians, business leaders and military commanders. The zero vision for nuclear weapons is a response to the growing risks of continued global nuclear weapons proliferation and the threat of terrorists getting their hands on nuclear weapons. One of the main ideas behind Global Zero is that this dangerous development can only be definitively stopped if the present nuclear-weapon states completely phase out their arsenals. The Global Zero action plan calls for a step-by-step, verified phase-out of all nuclear weapons by 2030.
