"Combating poverty requires a modern policy that extends beyond the traditional view of development assistance. Therefore the Government is now taking a holistic approach regarding the importance of economic growth and thus further steps in the process of reforming Swedish development assistance," says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

The Government has previously decided to establish a Business and Development Council. The Council is to advise the Government on how to make best use of the Swedish business sector's experience, expertise and resources, and contribute to the implementation of Sweden's policy for global development.

The Council's members have now been appointed and the first meeting has been held ahead of the press briefing on Friday. Ms Carlsson will present the work of the Council and the Government's views on development and economic growth on Friday. Also taking part in the press briefing will be the chair of the Council, State Secretary Joakim Stymne; Renée Andersson, Director of Ethics and Environment at fashion and design store Indiska; Sven-Åke Hellgren, Ericsson Credit AB and chair of Svensk Projektexport; and Stina Mossberg, Ramböll Natura AB and member of Swedish Consultants.

As part of the new policy, the Government also took a decision on a new policy for economic growth that shows the importance of economic growth for poor people as well as the need to review working methods and identify new actors in the area of development assistance.
