The Government welcomes the Commission's recommendation to commence accession negotiations with Iceland

The Government welcomes the Commission's recommendation to commence accession negotiations with Iceland. The application for membership of the EU was submitted to the Swedish Presidency in July last year.

Iceland is already a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), i.e., the European internal market, and of the Schengen agreement and is therefore well prepared for the coming negotiations.

"I am very pleased that the Commission recommends that negotiations with Iceland begin. Sweden intends to strive to ensure that the negotiation process is initiated as soon as possible," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.
