International Year of Biodiversity

The UN did proclaime 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. Throughout the year activities took place to raise awareness of biological diversity and ecosystem services, and intensive negotiations will be held in several forums to establish instruments to strengthen the implementation of international agreements in the area.

Towards a new vision and targets for the sustainable use fo the Earth's resources

In October 2010 the tenth meeting of the Conference
of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity
was held in Nagoya, Japan. At the conference, the
countries of the world adopted a new strategy, with a
global vision and targets for biodiversity, as well as an
international regime for access and to genetic resources
and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from such
resources (ABS), which is one of the critical issues.

Increase knowledge and awareness of biodiversity

The International Year of Biodiversity was an opportunity to increase understanding and knowledge of the significance
of biological diversity for life on Earth.

Nature's Year

Nature's Year is a collaboration between some 20 agencies and stakeholder organisations. It started in 2009 to mark the 100th anniversary of Sweden's national parks and nature conservation legislation. In 2010, Nature's Year and the collaborating organisations highlighted the International Year of Biodiversity.
