International cooperation on migration and asylum
As globalisation has increased, the international dimensions of migration issues have also increased in importance in both the European and wider international arenas. The starting point is close and intensified cooperation with strategic partners in third countries and with international organisations.
At EU level, the EU Global Approach to Migration forms the framework for cooperation with third countries. Sweden works for, and participates actively in, the development of EU policy in this area.
International cooperation and Swedish efforts for the global refugee situation are important parts of Swedish migration and asylum policy. Cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is particularly important. Sweden is one of the largest donors to the UNHCR. Sweden participates actively in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) with a view to deepening international dialogue in the area of migration.
