The main tasks of film policy include:
- supporting the production, distribution and screening of valuable film throughout the country,
- preserving film heritage and making it accessible,
- promoting regional and local film culture,
- promoting international exchange and cooperation in the area of film.
Initiatives targeting children and young people are given special priority. Another important objective is improving conditions for female film-makers.
Film policy support and initiatives are distributed and administered by the Swedish Film Institute. Support to Swedish film production and certain forms of support for distribution and screening are financed through the film agreement between the state, the film industry and several television companies. The state also finances a number of film policy initiatives outside of the agreement, for example support for film in schools and archiving activities.
