"We can learn from one another"
During the final panel discussion at the Northern Future Forum, the nine prime ministers spoke about which ideas they will be taking home from today's and yesterday's talks. Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said that it had been a meeting where "we demonstrate that we don't know it all and that we can learn from one another."
Flexibility, a voluntary basis and respect for the skills of older people are key concepts for getting more older people to stay in the workforce for longer, the prime ministers noted.
- It is clear that as we get older, we must work for longer, but those who have strenuous jobs cannot be forced to work longer. The system has to work on a voluntary basis, said Ms Thorning-Schmidt.
During the panel discussion, the issue of quotas for company boards of directors arose. Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg highlighted the positive effects quotas have had, and Iceland's Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir said that she hoped for the same results when Iceland introduces a similar system this year. However, Mr Cameron said that he did not want to see quotas, and preferred to try all other forms of positive action to achieve change.
