UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson and Minister for the Environment Lena Ek will be representing Sweden at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) on 20-22 June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The aim of the conference is to discuss what needs to be done to ensure that the world moves towards more sustainable development. This requires joint action and commitments in three areas in particular: economic development, social development and environmental protection. In addition, democracy and respect for human rights are prerequisites for sustainable development.
The UN has organised conferences on the theme of sustainable development every ten years since 1972, when the first was held in Stockholm. Rio+20 will be the fifth and is expected to gather almost 50 000 representatives of governments, parliaments, cities, civil society, multilateral organisations and the business community.
The Swedish delegation will comprise representatives of the government, the Riksdag, civil society and business, as well as youth representatives.
