Public service radio and television
The basic idea behind public service radio and television is to give everyone access to a broad and diverse range of television and radio programmes of high quality in all genres.
The programme services of the three independent public service broadcasters - Sveriges Radio AB (SR), Sveriges Television AB (SVT) and Sveriges Utbildningsradio AB (UR) - follow the general guidelines set out in the broadcasting licences and appropriation conditions that apply to them.
The services are financed through television licence fees. The Act on Financing of Radio and Television in the service of the public requires everyone who has a television receiver to pay a television licence fee. Radiotjänst i Kiruna AB has been commissioned to collect these fees and administer the funds. The Riksdag decides each year on the size of the television licence fee and on funding for the three public service broadcasters.
