Budget and objectives: International development cooperation

The objective of international development cooperation is to help create conditions that will enable poor people to improve their lives.

The objective for reform cooperation in eastern Europe are:

  • strengthened democracy
  • equitable and sustainable development
  • closer ties to the EU and its basic values

In the Budget Bill for 2010, the Government proposes a development cooperation budget of SEK 31.4 billion for 2010, which corresponds to one per cent of estimated GNI.

The development cooperation budget corresponds to one per cent of GNI, as estimated when the budget was set. The development cooperation budget for 2010 comes to SEK 31.4 billion. From this budget, deductions of SEK 4.4 billion are made, for example for refugee costs and the cost of Sweden's contribution to the European Union's common development assistance. The remaining sum under expenditure area 7, International development cooperation, amounts to SEK 27 billion, and includes the appropriation for development assistance activities and reform cooperation in eastern Europe. It also includes SEK 20.3 million relating to administrative costs for cooperation in the Baltic Sea region that is not classified as development cooperation.
