Summary

In recent times, the number of children wrongfully removed to, or retained in, a country other than that in which they habitually reside has increased. This is largely due to the fact that we travel more and that it is becoming increasingly common to move between different countries and form families across national borders. In the event of a separation, a conflict may arise over custody and access to common children, which may be more difficult to solve if, for example, the parents come from different countries. It is common in such situations, that is, in connection with or following a separation, for problems to arise and abduction often occurs to the country of origin of one of the parents.

This booklet aims to give you as a parent in this situation some practical support by offering information about what you yourself can do as a parent, what kind of help you can get and where you can turn. In addition, it contains information about what kind of help is not available to you. This information is also important to keep your expectations realistic.

This booklet is also directed at those of you who suspect that your child may be abducted, and offers information and advice on what action you can take to prevent an abduction in so far as possible.

Abductions occur both to and from Sweden. This booklet, however, focuses primarily on abductions from Sweden.
