Environment research
Environment research is of vital importance for shaping Swedish environmental policy, nationally and internationally.
The most important financers of environment research are:
- The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (Formas), which is responsible for the long-term development of knowledge, and funds both basic research and research in which the focus is on relevance for society.
- The Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research (Mistra), which primarily supports a number of major research programmes, focused on solving crucial environmental problems.
- The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, which primarily funds research to support the national environmental quality objectives.
- The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, which funds research on the risks of radiation, nuclear safety research and research on the terminal storage of spent nuclear fuel.
Other agencies that fund environment research are the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA), the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Research Council.
Most environment research is conducted at universities and other higher education institutions. Other institutions conducting research include:
- The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute(SMHI) - research on climate, meteorology, hydrology and oceanography
- The Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) - Research on geotechnology, landslides, avalanches and polluted land areas.
- Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) - Research on the management of natural resources and sustainability.
- IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute - Research co-financed with the business sector.
