International environmental cooperation

Environmental problems are transboundary problems that in many cases have global reach. As a result of the realisation that many environmental problems can only be solved through cooperation between countries, environmental policy has become increasingly international. Cooperation at both regional and global level as well as with individual countries will be needed if Sweden is to achieve the 16 environmental quality objectives adopted by the Swedish Riksdag. Sweden is also working to direct attention to issues concerning environment and poverty, environment and security and environment and health, all of which require global solutions. International environmental cooperation to protect and improve the environment is conducted in the Nordic region, the Baltic Sea region, the OECD and not least the UN, as well as in many environmental conventions and several other organisations. The EU is of key importance for action to strengthen environmental protection.
