Gunilla Carlsson to visit Sudan

Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson will travel to Sudan on 13-16 March to visit the capital, Khartoum, Darfur and southern Sudan.

Meetings will be held with representatives of Sudan's coalition government, the government in southern Sudan, international organisations, NGOs, internally displaced persons, and civil society in Darfur.

"The visit will be an opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions on developments in Sudan and reiterate Sweden's commitment to peace and our support for the people of Sudan. The focus will be on democratic development, efforts to achieve peace in Darfur, humanitarian issues and human rights, including women's rights," says Ms Carlsson.

The implementation of the peace agreement between north and south Sudan has entered a crucial phase, where the results of the elections in April and the referendum in January 2011 on the future of southern Sudan will be very important both for Sudan and the region. Human suffering in Darfur continues and the international community must remain committed to finding a solution to the conflict in Darfur.
