Rural development - a man's issue? This is the title of a seminar being organised by the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the aid organisation WeEffect on 7 October in Rome. The seminar is to take place in the margins of the annual session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security, which is being held on 7-11 October.

The second brochure 'Sweden - the new culinary nation' explains the Government's vision, which is an initiative to create more jobs, above all through food production in combination with tourism. The brochures are available for download or for order from the Government website.
Decision-makers and experts from across the Nordic region will gather to discuss wood construction at the Wood Construction Conference in Växjö on 9 April. Minister for Rural Affairs Eskil Erlandsson will be there to speak about the Government's investment in the Forest Kingdom vision and about wood construction as one of the focus areas of this vision.
On Thursday 21 March the first UN International Day of Forests will be celebrated. The idea of marking the importance of the world's forests for sustainable development on a designated day each year was proposed during the UN's International Year of Forests in 2011. Activities will be organised around the world on 21 March, at local, national and international level, to raise awareness of the multiple values of the forest.
Sweden's Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers focus on modern rural areas
During Sweden's Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2013, the Swedish Government, together with its Nordic colleagues in the Council of Ministers for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Agriculture, Food and Forestry, wants to focus on finding good ideas, practices and working methods to ensure our rural areas develop and remain vibrant.
School dinners and Swedish and Nordic food will be the focus when Minister for Rural Affairs Eskil Erlandsson visits Washington DC from 27 February to 1 March. Sustainable development in the forestry sector is also on the agenda during the visit.
Minister for Rural Affairs Eskil Erlandsson and Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will travel to Lyon and the the World Cuisine Contest on 29-30 January, where Adam Dahlberg will be representing Sweden. During the contest in Lyon, the ministers will also launch the 2014 European Cuisine Contest, which will be held in Stockholm.
Minister for Rural Affairs Eskil Erlandsson will visit Beijing on 23-25 January, with the expectation of creating conditions to increase the export of such products as pork and chicken. During the visit, Mr Erlandsson will meet Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu, Minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine Zhi Shuping, and Minister of State Forestry Administration Jia Zhibang to discuss issues concerning agriculture, food and forestry.
The Chinese market is crying out for Swedish chicken feet, milk powder and pigs' ears. Minister for Rural Affairs Eskil Erlandsson will lead a trade delegation to China and Hong Kong on 7-10 November. Swedish food and forestry will be the focus of the visit, in the hope of increasing exports of Swedish foodstuffs and other primary products.
