Björklund to visit UK

On Tuesday 3 June and Wednesday 4 June, Minister for Education Jan Björklund will visit the UK. During his stay, Mr Björklund will make a study visit to Ofsted, a government agency for inspection of education and training. He will also visit the Training and Development Agency for Schools, which is responsible for education and in-service training for teachers.

Registration and stricter qualifying rules for teachers

On 27 May the Inquiry on Teachers' Qualifications and Authorisation presented its report Registration and stricter qualifying rules (Swedish Government Official Reports SOU 2008:52) to Minister for Education Jan Björklund. Under the Inquiry's proposals, registration will be required for a teacher to qualify to teach in school or to take charge of teaching activities in a preschool children's group. For registration, new teachers will need to successfully complete a probationary year after their degree in education. Under the proposals, the system of teacher registration and preschool teacher registration will enter into force in two stages in 2010.

The Upper Secondary School Inquiry has submitted its proposal for a new upper secondary school to Minister for Education Jan Björklund. The main task in the remit was to propose a new structure for upper secondary school; vocational programmes have been given particular emphasis in the Inquiry.

Better Swedish for immigrants education

Minister for Education Jan Björklund and Minister for Integration and Gender Equality Nyamko Sabuni today presented seven measures to improve Swedish for immigrants (SFI) education. Focus is being given to skills enhancement for teachers, national tests, clearer goals and time limits for SFI education.
