Nils Wahl appointed Advocate-General at the Court of Justice of the European Union

The governments of the EU Member States yesterday appointed Judge Nils Wahl of the General Court as Advocate-General at the Court of Justice of the European Union. He will take up his post on 7 October 2012 for a term of six years. This is the first time a Swedish Advocate-General has been appointed.

Mr Wahl has been a judge at the General Court since October 2006. Previously, since 2001, he was professor of European integration law at Stockholm University, where he served as a senior lecturer at the law department between 1994 and 2001. Between 1993 and 2004, Mr Wahl was also executive secretary of the Fakultetskurser foundation at Stockholm University. Since 1995, he has been an associate professor and doctor of laws, as well as holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Law.

Mr Wahl has had several appointments as legal adviser in the area of competition law, including anti-cartel enforcement and a review of Swedish competition legislation. He participated as an expert in the EC Law Inquiry prior to Swedens accession to the EU (SOU 1994:10). He has also been chair of the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies (20022006), member of the Council for Competition Law Matters (20012006), arbitrator at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (19992000) and editor of the yearbook of the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies (20022005). Mr Wahl has also written a number of books, reports and articles on competition law.
