Carl Bildt: Break the isolation of Gaza

"Today's extensive Israeli air attacks on a wide range of targets in the Gaza area means a serious continuation of the escalation of the tension begun when, just before Christmas, Hamas refused to renew the ceasefire that had been in place for the last six months", says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt, commenting on the latest developments in Gaza.

"Although this ceasefire did not live up to expectations - particularly with regard to alleviating the Israeli blockade of Gaza - it would have been better for everyone if it had continued to be respected.

"Instead one military step after the other is being taken.
After Hamas intensified its rocket attacks, today's Israeli air attacks imply a serious escalation. Despite the fact that they are targeted at what Israel regards as Hamas' infrastructure, it is inevitable that innocent civilians are wounded and killed.
The parties must now exercise restraint and as soon as possible return to the ceasefire," states the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Carl Bildt also emphasises the importance of breaking the isolation of Gaza which is serious in humanitarian terms.

"If Israel thought that this policy could help break Hamas' power, it is now clear that it has been counterproductive, even in this respect.
