Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt on the situation in Gaza
"I welcome the fact that the UN Security Council has now demanded an immediate halt to all military activities against and from Gaza," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt in a statement on Sunday.
"It is also important that the Security Council focuses on the serious financial and humanitarian situation for the population of Gaza and demands measures to ensure that people can receive food, fuel and medical assistance.
"In view of this, both Hamas and Israel should, as soon as possible, declare that they are willing to return to the previous ceasefire and put a stop to all hostilities. It is also important that the border crossings can be opened so that both international assistance and normal supplies can get through to the severely afflicted people of Gaza," concludes Carl Bildt.
