SvenskaMinister for Culture congratulates Isol on the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award
It was announced today that the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award has been won by Argentinian artist and author Isol.
"Isol is an original and imaginative artist with her own visual language, who writes and illustrates from a true children's perspective. She breathes new life into children's literature in words and image, and stands up for children's right to be independent, questioning individuals," says Ms Adelsohn Liljeroth.
Nordic Ministers of Culture Meet with Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs
Nordic Ministers of Culture and representatives of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Åland met with Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Tara Sonenshine on February 20 at the U.S. Department of State to mark the opening of the Nordic Cool 2013 festival.
During their meeting, Under Secretary Sonenshine and the Nordic Ministers of Culture discussed the importance of cultural diplomacy as a vehicle for building mutual understanding in an increasingly interconnected world. Recent programs sponsored by U.S. Embassies in the Nordics have focused on engaging U.S. and Nordic Somali diaspora communities as well advancing scientific research in the Arctic.
Nordic culture festival in Washington DC
From 19 February to 17 March, the Nordic culture festival, Nordic Cool, will be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. Over 750 artists and cultural workers from the Nordic countries, including Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Åland will participate in the month-long event.
"The Kennedy Center's choice of the Nordic countries for its 2013 international festival confirms that there is great interest in Nordic culture," says Minister for Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth.

Counsellors for Cultural Affairs
The overall task of Swedens's Counsellors for Cultural Affairs posted abroad is to promote the role of culture in contacts with other countries and to encourage cultural dialogue. Cultural Affairs Counsellors are currently stationed at Sweden's embassies in Berlin, London, Moscow, Beijing and Washington, and at the Permanent Representation of Sweden to the European Union in Brussels. There is also a combined post of Head of the Swedish Cultural Centre in Paris and Counsellor for Cultural Affairs at the Embassy in Paris.
