Persons sentenced abroad
The fact that crime is becoming increasingly internationalised has resulted in more and more Swedish citizens being sentenced to long terms of imprisonment abroad. Enforcement of these sentences can be transferred to Sweden under the Act on International Cooperation in the Enforcement of Criminal Judgments (1972:260), which means that the person thereafter may serve his or her sentence in Sweden. In some cases it can be a matter of prison sentences of up to 40-50 years.
As a condition for agreeing to the transfer of enforcement to Sweden, the other country often requires that there be no possibility of the sentence being commuted by the Swedish authorities.
